Sauna

A little hot and relatively dry heat is all that is required to open the pores and eliminate toxins by sweating. This is one of the most ancient and well known treatments in the world. In fact, it would appear that in the ancient Aztec settlements, women gave birth in a kind of “sweating” hut, in this way taking advantage of the relaxing and soothing effect of the heat to alleviate the birth pains. Besides the therapeutic properties, many of the world’s peoples, including the American Indians of the Sioux tribe, considered a sweat bath a sacred ritual for healing and purifying.

When should you have a sauna?
There is no particularly suitable time for having a sauna; however, if you want to receive maximum benefits you must allow plenty of time. With regard to what you should eat, a snack of yogurt and fruit is more than sufficient. To help you to sweat we suggest a drink of warm herbal tea before entering the sauna. When the treatment is over, it is a good idea to drink water, fruit juice or herbal tea and avoid alcohol.

It is important to drink.
When you sweat in the sauna you lose a lot of body liquids and mineral salts and it is fundamentally important to replace them by drinking. However, sweetened, stimulating and above all alcoholic drinks before, during and after a sauna must be avoided. Among those most suitable are, still water, herbal tea made from raspberry, mallow, nettle or lime blossom, fruit or vegetable juices. The best time to drink them is after the sauna.

Contraindications
People suffering from high blood pressure, heart or lung problems and problems to do with their circulatory system should avoid using the sauna. We also suggest that anyone using the sauna for the first time, ask the advice of their general practitioner before beginning treatment.

Positive effects
There are no statistics as to the benefits of saunas with regard to the mind and soul, however most people agree that after a sauna one feels a sense of relaxation of the mind and body, a lessening of anxiety and a sensation of renewed energy.

Sauna and weight loss
The profuse sweating caused by the sauna, eliminates approximately one litre of water, deep cleansing the skin and removing impurities and toxins. This loss of liquids should however be replaced at the end of the treatment by means of water, fruit juices or herbal teas.
The sauna does not therefore make you lose weight, but it does undoubtedly stimulate the body’s metabolism.

Sauna and beauty
Sauna deeply detoxifies the skin leaving it more radiant, translucent and supple. Furthermore, the warmth encourages relaxation and helps those who suffer from sleepless nights. It also improves blood circulation and the natural flow of lymph fluid, enhancing the activity of the skin, tissues and glands.
